13th January: Desford U16s v Rugby Town U16
After a lengthy Christmas break, the girls started the year with a return trip to Desford and renewed optimism after a tough first half of the season.
Despite the very wet and cold conditions, the girls were really up for this game, showing great determination right from the kick off.
Rugby were slightly on top in the first half in terms of possession and chances made, but unfortunately could not take advantage of numerous goal scoring opportunities. At the other end Desford were more clinical in front of goal and managed to convert two of their opportunities into goals. 2-0 to Desford at half time was a bit harsh on Rugby but there was still cause for optimism as the team was playing well and still very much in the game.
The second half kicked off and was a fairly even contest but Desford then scored 2 quick goals 20 minutes into the second half. All credit to Rugby who continued to fight and compete and were rewarded when Hollie pulled a goal back through Hollie to make it 4-1. Despite the score line we always felt we had a chance of getting back in the game as the girls were still playing really well. A fifth goal for Desford after 25 minutes secured the win but Rugby responded instantly with a goal from Hollie to make it 5-2. As the second half progressed with a 3 goal lead Desford grew in confidence, but Rugby continued to contest every tackle, soaked up the pressure really well and always looked dangerous hitting Desford on the break.
Full Time: Desford 5 Rugby Town 2
Sometimes in a game you don’t quite get what you deserve, this was one of those days. Rugby competed excellently and had as many if not more shots than Desford. Despite being behind behind for most of the game we always felt we were in with a chance. The game was played in good spirit in terms of players, management and supporters. The management were very proud of the girls in terms of their effort as everyone gave their best on the day, we can’t ask for any more.
It is hard to pick anyone out but a few players deserve a mention:
Rebecca made numerous very brave blocks and saves at the feet of Desford attackers.
Hollie scored 2 excellent goals and was a constant threat to the Desford defence.
Player of the Match Kerri. Well done to Kerri for a real captains performance. Kerri was a real strength in central midfield, putting in tackle after tackle and setting up attacks for Hollie and Lauren. Kerri also provided excellent motivation to her team mates which contributed to the all round team performance.
