Asfordby Amateurs u16s v Rugby Town u16s

The team were up against familiar opposition in Asfordby, a club who always offer us a warm welcome and play the game in the right spirit.

Rugby started very brightly and were soon a goal ahead through an excellent shot from Hollie. Rugby continued to dominate the game, with the wing play of Lauren, Hollie and Megan E causing Asfordby plenty of problems. The team were now playing with confidence and were rewarded with two further goals through excellent shots from Lauren and Hollie. Rugby were controlling the game but credit to Asfordby who did not give up and were rewarded with a goal just before half time.

The second half was a more even affair, Asfordby kept plugging away but could not penetrate a strong Rugby defence. Rugby made a few changes and continued to be the stronger team, still making numerous chances. Despite some excellent play Rugby struggled to add the finishing touches to these moves and added just one goal in the second half through Lauren, but with a bit more luck could have had a few more which would not have flattered Rugby.

An all round excellent team performance in a game played in excellent spirit gave Rugby our first win of the season and sees us move a couple of places up the league.

Given the fact that it was a great team performance everyone deserves a mention:

Rebecca was not overworked in goal but dealt confidently with anything that came her way.

The defence of Sophie, Tasha, Emily and Eggy were very solid and it was pleasing to see them bringing the ball out of defence and starting attacks.

The midfield of Alice, Kerri and Sammie all worked really hard to protect the defence with some tough tackling and played some excellent passes down the flanks to start attacks.

The forward line switched between Hollie, Lauren, Cait Megan E and Megan G, all causing the Asfordby defence plenty of problems with their pace and skill.

Trying to choose a player of the match was a difficult job as there were so many contenders in a good team performance but one player slightly edged it. For her extremely energetic midfield performance, putting in lots of tackles and making some strong forward runs the player of the match was Sammie, well done Sammie!
