Rugby Town Girls Wildcats travelled to Coalville today, to take part in their first Central Venues League (CVL) U7s Tournament. Four teams were playing with each team playing 3 games, 7 minutes each way. The Rugby Town players were ecstatic to be pulling on a Rugby Town shirt for the first time and had a warm up session with the young leaders prior to their first game.
RT vs Market Bosworth. This was the Wildcats first ever proper game and they listened very well to the young leaders and referee. They spent the first half settling down with enthusiasm and effort sky high from the first kick. Both teams were very bunched up for a few minutes but gradually space appeared and Rugby were quick to take advantage from positive tackles and started to move the ball well.
Jack made some confident saves and looked very comfortable in goal throughout the game. With possession, Chloe was quick and eager to push forward with support from other players. Holly made some good tackles and was also very good at tracking back to defend.
Rugby Wildcats were strong in the second half with Sofia and Emelia getting into the thick of the action. Rugby proved quick in the counter attack with all players showing off some pretty impressive ball skills which they have clearly been working hard on in training.
Rugby Town Wildcats Vs Cosby Utd. This was Rugby’s strongest game. It was a pleasure to watch with the team displaying excellent communication and great special awareness, especially during goal kicks and throw ins. Megan pulled off some exceptional throw ins, with Beatrice and Matilda moving well to receive the ball.
There were several flashes of superb combination play with Chloe, Summer and several other players passing the ball forward which proved fruitful. Megan also made not one, but two strong and quick runs to Rugby’s advantage.
Rugby Town Wildcats Vs Coalville Town Ravenettes. This was Rugby’s hardest game against a very determined Coalville side. Jack had a bit of work to do in goal and proved to be a very safe pair of hands, providing his, now trademark, air of calm confidence.
The team covered a lot of ground during this game with everyone working hard to regain and retain possession. Again, during throw ins and goal kicks, Rugby were really very impressive in making space and in their general game awareness. Marking also really improved during this game and during the second half, you could really see all of the players intuitively picking up elements of the game.
Unfortunately, Rugby Wildcats conceded a penalty in the second half, but in the most delightful of circumstances. Megan, upon misunderstanding a coaches instruction to allow Jack to have the ball, stopped the game, picked up the ball and handed the ball to Jack, much to the amusement of all spectators. Nevertheless, Jack handled the penalty with no fuss or drama.
The 3 games were an absolute joy to watch. Many spectators were commenting upon the enthusiasm, level of skill and sportsmanship displayed by Rugby Town. It was hard to believe these were their first games as a squad.
The overriding image were of 9 players, proud of their club and playing with as much fun and enthusiasm as I have ever seen during any game I have watched.
We look forward to the next CVL tournaments in March and April. The team should be extremely proud of themselves, and I feel that they may well be the ones to watch in the future!

Finally, thank you and a massive well done to the young leaders who did an excellent job in coaching and managing the games. The relationship you have with the team is excellent and the fact the players are enjoying football so much is, in no small part, down to you.
