Well it was cup match day after last week’s postponed away match. It proved to be an interesting game as we played higher league opposition against Nuneaton Borough U12’s Devils.

The opening 5 minutes was mainly Borough pressure on our goal with some excellent goalkeeping keeping the score even. This allowed Town to step up and take the initiative to the away teams end. This was delivered with some excellent running, pace and closing down of defenders, providing the Rugby girls an opportunity to go 2-0 up after 20 mins, with two well executed finishes from Lottie and Eve.

At this stage it looked comfortable but unfortunately the lead didn’t last long as the Devils seized the moment and pushed 4 players high up the pitch, constantly pressing the Town goal, which resulted in a direct turnaround and 4 quick first half late goals to put Nuneaton well in front as the half came to a close at 2-4.

As the second half opened and despite an energised display Rugby were unable to break into the Nuneaton lead despite large amounts of possession and good play. As the second half came towards its end, a quick tackle and transition saw Eve on a breakaway, helping the team add another goal.

At this point a come back looked on the cards but unfortunately an own goal made the deficit too much to overhaul at 3-6. Despite this the Rugby team saved the best until last with an excellent chipped goal from Izzy O., a good distance away after a corner ball was pushed out, which perfectly found the back of the net to end the game 4-6.

Unfortunately, no cup run this season, but an excellent effort and a fairly even game in many ways, demonstrating how strong this team can play, even against a higher level opposition. Individual improvement was also clearly visible, with newer players, Maggie, Hetty, and Amy, looking much more comfortable on the pitch, and demonstrating the techniques and skills we’ve been working on in training. Our U12s put forth 100% effort and hard work when on the pitch, which is fantastic to see.
