Gaining the extra hour in the morning with the clocks going back helped our early Sunday morning start as we played away from home at the very nice Leicester City complex against Leicester U10s.
As the game kicked off both teams worked hard to create chances and push the ball forward, with the majority of the play being fought out in the middle of the park and Leicester’s defensive end. The Rugby girls worked the wings well with some good opportunities and defended strongly throughout with real composure and maturity whenever a counterattack occurred.
This was highlighted by some critical excellent last-minute stops by the Rugby Town defensive and keeper combination. As the half ended Rugby, we’re feeling confident, reflecting the overall efforts of the first half period.
As the second half kicked off the Rugby girls stepped up the solid work from the first period with real guile and attacking play. The passing was a particular highlight as the team moved the ball into the attacking third with a free-flowing display allowing Rugby to dominate the game despite the Leicester City girls working hard throughout the game.
As the game concluded the Rugby girls got stronger, displaying high energy, pressing football at every moment, whilst pushing hard on the home team with an effective and energetic style. The strength in the middle of the field throughout the game allowed the other positions time and space to be on the front foot at every opportunity.
The biggest highlight was the feeling of a real team effort with passing and team spirit again at the top of the Rugby approach. Special mention also to the referee who did a great job and the complex which made fantastic post-match sausage and bacon batches!
