A chilly morning for a cup game in Market Bosworth and questionable whether the pitch was playable after a week of rain had left a bog at one end. It was the first game since Christmas, we weren’t sure how we’d perform against a good team.  But from the kick-off the girls got stuck in , the difficult conditions that made it hard to control the ball.

Soapy led by example showing strength in possession and trying to thread balls through to the strikers.  A couple of early shots from Chloe and Hollie went wide.  The game was evenly matched with Rugby’s defence of Amy, Jess and Ria holding up well and Jasmine covering when needed.

Mid way through the first half a corner from Ellie was picked up by Soapy at the near post who slotted the ball across the goal to Jasmine to score.  A well-worked goal gave the girls confidence their style of play was working.

Further chances came as Rugby continued to press through Grace on the left and came close again when Liv’s shot went narrowly wide.  Market Bosworth created chances too although Rugby were alert to the danger and came out to collect the ball neatly.

1-0 at half time.  And more of the same in the second half as Hev, Colesy, Macey and Hav came on and continued to work hard to win the ball and keep possession. As the game became stretched and more physical we were awarded a free kick 22 yards out from goal.

An excellent curled strike over the wall by Chloe rattled the stanchion and Soapy was unlucky not to convert the rebound.

Chloe was eventually rewarded for her perseverance after Hollie won the ball and made an excellent weighted pass for Chloe to calmly shot past the goalkeeper.

Credit to Market Bosworth who kept trying to find a goal of their own but were thwarted by some smart saves from Ruby and some last-ditch tackles from the defence.  All the girls gave their all including at one point Jess who slid into the muddy puddle like Peppa Pig to win back the ball. It was a good team performance in the challenging conditions.

Player of the Match: Jasmine for her excellent midfield positional play, whether she was covering for our defence or scoring at the other end.

Final score: 2-0 win was their reward and onto the next round of the cup.  We’ll done girls!
