Rugby Town u13s Lionesses hosted Barrow and were looking to keep
their unbeaten run going. Rugby had to make some last minute
changes due to illness and other unavailability, but were confident. It
was also good to see Matilda return from a long-term injury.

Rugby started the game very strong and were taking the game to
Barrow. Matilda having returned the side, was clearly up for the
game, and had some great chances. She was rewarded with a long
range shot which gave the Barrow keeper no chance.

Emmi again had a confident day in goal, and has really developed
into a reliable keeper.

Rugby’s defence of Ruby, Beth and Alice did have to have some
positional changes, with Alice having to move from right back to left
back. However they all adapted well and defended strongly
throughout the game. The Rugby defence has developed into a nice
unit, working well together, and have only conceded 5 goals in their
opening 9 games.

Katie, Elisa and Poppy began the game in midfield. Katie had another
strong game, controlling the centre of the pitch well and linking up
with the wingers.
Elisa and Poppy both made some great attacking moves, as well as
pressuring the opposition early to prevent counter attacks. Macy and
Matilda also rotated into the wide positions throughout the game.
Both girls also did really well delivering some great crosses.
The midfield players are really beginning to pass the ball around well,
and their passing and movements often involve 3-4 players resulting
in the opposition struggling to contain them.

The Rugby attack was again working well together with Jess, Matilda
and Agga putting the Barrow defence under pressure, and were
unlucky on a number of occasions not to put the game to bed early
in the first half. However the attack kept up the pressure and it was
great to see the girls look to pass the ball, knowing that they would
receive a nice ball back to open up the opposition. Jess’ hard work
was rewarded with two goals, one of which was from a lovely pass by
Matilda. Agga also was unlucky not to get on the score sheet with
some great football, and even an effort on goal, with an attempted
overhead bicycle kick.
Barrow kept up their work rate right to the final whistle, and in the
first half did strike the cross bar, which looked to be going in.
However Emmi reacted well to prevent it.
Rugby were strong throughout the game, and are clearly playing with
confidence.
Final score 3-0

Manager’s player: Ruby for a strong game in defence, making a
number of important headers and winning the ball with some strong
tackles.

Parents player: Matilda for a strong performance on her return to
the side. Really hitting the ground running and scoring a nice goal.

Thank you to Pete for assisting and running the line, and thanks to
the parents for their fantastic support of the girls.
