An early morning kick off at Butlin Road for Rugby Town, another match with no rain which is always appreciated by the supporters. Before the match kicked off both teams observed the Remembrance Sunday silence impeccably.
Rugby started brightly with a slightly different formation, and had an early shot to test the Coalville goalkeeper, it was going to become a recurring theme for the first half. Another shot was saved and Megan had a corner that went right across the box, just asking for somebody to get a touch to put it in. Rugby continued to attack with Megan and Sophie both having shots that went wide.
The referee awarded a free kick to Rugby just outside the area but sportingly Rugby knocked it out for a goal kick as it was not clear based on the pitch markings whether it should have been a free kick in the first place. The opposition manager appreciated the gesture and Coalville continued with a goal kick.
Ronniee then came close to breaking the deadlock with a shot that went just over followed by another shot from Megan that went wide. Jasmine in goal was a spectator for most of the first half with the defence of Daisy-May, Amelia and Caitlin stopping any of the attacks that Coalville attempted.
Half time 0-0
Into the second half and Dave started to use his substitutes with Erin and Bianca coming on, both played well with some nice touches in the middle of the pitch to try and start off more attacks from Rugby.
Coalville started to come back into the game and used their physical advantage to try and generate some pressure on Jasmine’s goal, they had a shot that went just over and at 0-0 it was still a tight game.
Bianca, Poppy and Sophie all had shots that were either blocked, went wide or saved, it was testament to the Coalville goalkeeper who ended up being their player of the match. More corners for Rugby put pressure on the Coalville goal but they couldn’t find the finishing touch.
A long throw from Coalville caused a moment of panic in the Rugby box but Jasmine saved superbly, getting down low to keep the shot out. Coalville then had a great chance but their striker hit it over from three yards out. Rugby went down the other end looking for a goal and Macey was just unable to finish after a good cross.
Full time 0-0, overall a fair result, the second successive clean sheet though so the work on the training ground to be solid at the back is paying off. More work to do in training further up the pitch but having a solid defence will serve the team well for the rest of the league campaign.
Coaches player of the match – Jasmine for a great save in the second half and for taking on her new position in her stride.
Thanks to Dave and Dave for all their efforts during the match, to Tony for refereeing, the two linesmen and to all the parents for their support and encouragement today.
