On a very pleasant Autumn morning, the U8 Lionesses travelled to Anstey for their latest match.  We were given a very warm welcome by the opposition and the game was played in a great spirit from the first kick to the last.
The game was very end to end with both teams pushing forward intent on scoring plenty of goals.  We weren’t disappointed and were the spectators were provided with lots of entertainment.  We were even treated to a penalty which is quite unusual at U8s and not something we have practiced in training.
As usual the girls played in different positions to continue their learning, this is something the girls are getting more comfortable with week on week and we will see the benefits in the long term.
Some of the highlights were:
Seren was a rock in the defence, regularly making interceptions and tackles, and also having a great period in goal.
Millie also performed very well in goal and was fierce in the midfield, making some really good tackles and playing some great through passes for the striker to run on to.
Isabella played a really strong game in defence, midfield and attack, was often the player breaking forward. She was also the team’s first ever penalty taker.
Belinda demonstrated great skill and awareness in all the positions she played, she was often the player who took a moment to look up and pick out a team mate with a pass which is great at this early stage of the team.
Evie was a constant threat to the Anstey defence with strong runs on goal whether from midfield or in attack, she also did a lot of tracking back and tackling to help out her team mates showing great team spirit.
The coaches agreed that the player of the match was Aria, she was literally all over the pitch either dribbling with ball to threaten the opposition goal or fighting to get the ball back. Aria took a few knocks but that didn’t deter her and came back even stronger. When in attack she held her position really well which resulted in opportunities.  Well done to Aria on your player of the match.
In summary a great game with plenty of action for both teams, admittedly Anstey finished a little stronger as they benefited from having lots of substitutes to add a bit of energy to the team in the closing stages.
