An early morning trip to Lutterworth for the girls this week and they all managed to turn up on time even though the clocks went back overnight which caused some panic in certain households. Rugby had a depleted squad for the game with a few players missing because of the half term holiday.
Rugby kicked off the first half with their normal tactic of launching it towards the opposition goal on what can only be described as a rather uneven playing surface. Lutterworth started brightly and had a couple of early attacks before Rugby started to find their feet, amongst the potholes, in the game. A great run from Sophie, who was industrious throughout the whole game, nearly resulted in a goal for Rugby.
Macey then had a good run towards goal but was unable to beat the Lutterworth keeper, both teams kept attacking which resulted in a couple of corners for each team but neither team could break the deadlock. The Lutterworth number 9, who was very skilful and had to be marshalled by both Daisy-May and Amelia throughout the game, then had a shot that went just wide.
The referee then awarded a penalty to Rugby after a trip in the box, Jasmine stepped up to take it but it was well saved by the Lutterworth keeper, who was excellent throughout the game, and the score remained at 0-0.
Rugby kept attacking and Jasmine had a couple of shots, both right foot and left foot that went just wide of the Lutterworth goal. Macey also had a shot that almost caught the Lutterworth keeper out because of the awkward bounce.
Half time 0-0
Into the second half and Rugby started brightly, Jasmine had another shot that was well saved by the keeper. Caitlin was also working very hard with a number of good runs towards the Lutterworth goal. Another good run and cross from Sophie caused problems in the Lutterworth defence but it was not to be for Rugby. Lutterworth went up the other end and scored with a good finish into the bottom corner.
As the game opened up Rugby started to come back into it, great throw-ins from Poppy caused problems and Izzy had a few good runs forward towards the Lutterworth goal. Sophie had a shot that went just over, Rugby were trying everything to find an equaliser but it was not to be. After a giant kick from Megan, Rugby had another shot that just went wide.
Lutterworth then scored a second goal with about 5 minutes left of the game, a smart finish into the corner just going past the advancing Megan.
Full time 2-0 to Lutterworth, not the result that Rugby had hoped for but their work rate was impressive throughout the entire game and they did not give up. The team spirit is equally as impressive and the team and individuals are progressing which is good to see.
Coaches player of the match – Louise for all her hard work during the match and at training.
Thanks to Dave and Dave for all their support during the match, to Lutterworth for hosting, the referee and the two linesmen , and to all the parents for their vocal support today.
