Bright sunshine welcomed Rothwell Aztecs to Butlin Road, and Rugby made an equally bright start in the 1st half.

With an attacking lineup, the midfield trio of Annabelle, Ruby, and Sophie were playing neat passes and in triangles that created early chances for Anya and Chloe. The early pressure was building and a good tackle from Annabelle and through ball created the space for Sophia to launch one of her trademark forward runs.

Rothwell started to come back into the game with fast breaks and direct runs, and Olivia was strong and determined in taking responsibility for the defence. With support from Anya and Ruby, the midfield continued to press and a clever free-kick routine created another chance that was well saved. From the resulting corner, Chloe was able to pounce on a loose ball.

Ava and Caitlin came on and both girls were able to show their good close control and dribbling skills in midfield. Rothwell started to come back into the game and their tricky forward brought out a number of good saves from Jasmine.

Unfortunately, one of the Rothwell players was taken ill and wasn’t able to continue for the 2nd half; without any substitutes available, Ava from Rugby showed terrific sportsmanship by volunteering to swap sides to keep the numbers equal. This created some mixed emotions for the supporting parents as some home fans became away fans and were suitably heckled as a result.

Further changes meant that Chloe made her debut in goal, Jasmine went up front and Esme came on in defence for the 2nd half. Chances were being created with some superb wing play from Ruby but the final finish was proving hard to find. Rothwell continued to play on the break.

With so many of the Rugby players having taken part in the cross country running, the energy levels began to drop as the legs became tired. This allowed Rothwell to begin to dominate in the final third and more chances were being created.
