We were at home this week against East Goscote, kicking off at 1pm and managed to play before a thick snow blast took over the rest of the afternoon. The girls appear to be getting more and more comfortable in their positions each week. Esme started at the top of our formation, with Emy-Mae and Sienna W. in midfield, Emilia in defense, and Phoebe in goal. Rugby started strong, chasing every ball, making runs up the wings, and looking for the pass when pressed from the opposition. Playing two 20 minute halves in a bitter cold, we subbed often, with Ellie and Sienna M. coming on soon after the start to keep our legs fresh. All the girls gave 100%, and the swapping players often gave each one more energy to push hard when playing.
East Goscote were a strong team whose players could control the ball and pass well. Getting past their defense was not going to be easy. However, with a few great runs and connecting passes, Rugby Town managed to create an opportunity for Sienna M., who turned a difficult angle into Rugby success. Ely-May and Sienna W. repeated their confident wing attacks, while Esme and Sienna M. pressed forward into the centre to be open to receiving passes from the wings. Ellie and Emilia performed well in midfield and defense, making many excellently timed tackles.
While Rugby managed to control possession for much of the match, East Goscote seemed to get stronger as the match progressed, putting a lot of pressure on Emilia or Ellie in defense and keeping Phoebe on her toes more than a few times, but she controlled each situation well. Rugby Town’s continued determination to win the ball and to press forward together as a team allowed for more celebration, with Sienna M. and Sienna W. both having positive results. The team also exhibited more organised attacking and defending of corner kicks, which is something we’ve been specifically working on over the last few weeks. Each team member should be proud of their performance Sunday.
Player of the Match: Ellie for swift tackling and crucial tackling.
Parents’ Player: Sienna M. for her growing confidence and forward attacks.
