Rugby Town U9 Lionesses vs. Broughton United U9 Lionesses

15th December 2024, kick off 10:30

Team – Amelie, Evie, Florence, Imogen, Liyanah, Millie H, Paige

This week, the U9 Lionesses welcomed Broughton United U9 Lionesses to home soil for a cool, early morning KO.

A fast start and early warning signs from Broughton required our lionesses to switch on and stay alert. As the game went on, our lionesses started to gain a foothold and with this, confidence grew in all areas of the pitch. Overall, the game was an evenly matched affair and thoroughly enjoyable to watch. With no substitutes available, every player was fully committed and left nothing in the tank, they should all be very proud of their attitude and effort today.

Coaches are impressed by the continual improvement from this team… A lot of players were asked to play in unfamiliar positions, and they all coped very well indeed. This goes to show of how well this new team/group of players have developed in such a short period of time.

Amelie: Started as goalkeeper with a very confident display, often charging off her line to intercept our oppositions attackers. The second half saw Amelie move out of goal and into a central midfield role where she was immense in winning the ball back & driving forward to start and support offensive attacking moves.

Evie: Started the game in her usual winger role, very direct & exciting to watch. Evie ran her socks off to the point she had nothing left in the tank. Evie then helped the team by dropping back in defence where she excelled. Then later, after her battery had recharged, she was back to a wingers role

Florence: Same great performance as Evie… started the game in her usual winger role, again another very direct & exciting player to watch. Florence also ran her socks off to the point she had nothing left in the tank. She also then helped the team by dropping back in defence where she was looking very confident and assured.

Imogen: Started in central midfield battling to win possession and making some great intelligent passes out wide and direct to the centre forward to get the team on the front foot. Second half Imogen was moved to a centre forward role where she exceled in a positive no nonsense direct approach. She looked menacing and had the oppositions defenders on the back foot with some great solo runs and attempts at goal.

Liyanah: Stared as centre forward running tirelessly to make herself available for the through ball. Swapped to a winger’s role where she didn’t stop running the lines to the point she had nothing eft to give. Liyanah then dropped to defence where she commanded the position and gave no time for the opposition attackers to get an attempt on goal.

Millie H: Started as left back for the first time, she coped well and battled with the opposition’s attackers for every ball. Millie then moved to a winger’s role in the second half where her high energy and nonstop running shone through. Never stopped chasing even a lost cause, always hustling and harassing the opposition to force a mistake.

Paige: This was Paige’s long-awaited comeback to football after a long absence due to injury. She started at right back with a commanding no nonsense “get ball, clear the lines” style. A proper central defender role was nailed here. Paige then went into goal and gave a not so surprising, assured, safe and excellent performance in her usual role as keeper. No chance of getting anything passed this keeper!
