A lunch time kick off in Nuneaton for Rugby this week. To begin with we must be thankful for the astro pitch that we have at Butlin Road. Not all clubs are lucky enough to have a decent pitch to play on; the moles had clearly not got the memo not to mess up the pitch in the week. When somebody has to get a spade out before kick off to remove some of the mounds on one side of the pitch you get the feeling that maybe it isn’t going to be your day.
Nuneaton kicked off and immediately showed their intent, having an early shot that was well saved by Megan. Rugby started to find their feet and Ronniee had a shot that went just wide. Nuneaton though, clearly used to the slopes and conditions of the pitch, were showing that they were up for the game today with a good attack which resulted in a corner.
Nuneaton then had a free kick which was well defended by Rugby. Shortly after a good run from the Nuneaton forward resulted in the first goal of the game, finished off well into the corner. Rugby came back into the game with a good run from Poppy and a cross that nobody could get onto the end of.
A dangerous cross came in and Nuneaton were able to double their lead with a simple tap in. After a good pass from Sophie, Ronniee took her chance well to make it 2-1. Sophie then had a shot that went just wide.
Half time 2-1 Nuneaton.
After a half time team talk from Dave , Rugby kicked off the second half. A big throw from Poppy resulted in a corner but from the corner nobody was able to finish to bring the scores level.
Nuneaton then had a shot that was well saved by Megan, Rugby pressing forward for the equaliser meant that there was always a chance that Nuneaton would be able to break away and so the defence had to be alert at all times.
Ronniee then had a shot that was well saved by the Nuneaton keeper, Rugby kept looking for the equaliser whilst Nuneaton were happy to attack on the break. After a goal kick went straight to a Rugby player the parents thought it was going to be 2-2 but the resulting shot went wide.
Full Time 2-1
It was a tough day at the football office for Rugby this week.
Coaches player Ioana, she is very new to the team and came out today battling hard.
Thanks to Dave and Dave for all their encouragement during the match in challenging circumstances. Thanks to Nuneaton Borough for hosting, the referee, the linesmen (Especially James for proving that the flag could be pointed both ways ) and to the parents for their support.
P.S. Happy birthday Daisy-May, excellent reluctant flag waving whilst the team sang.
