Rugby Town were away for the second week running, a Sunday morning trip to Blaby with the added complication of the normally reliable M69 having traffic problems. This meant that some of the girls were a little bit late to the match. Last season the away trip to Blaby was the first game that some of the girls had played together as a team and it resulted in a 3-0 defeat. Rugby were desperate to not have a repeat this time around.
Sometimes we should realise that we are spoiled by being able to play on a nice flat astro pitch. There is certainly a range of pitches in the league and unfortunately this one was one of those where the groundsman had a falling out with his lawnmower. Uneven and on a slope made it difficult for the flair players of Rugby to play on. Some parts of the pitch looked like they had suffered from one or two hulk smashes (for the Marvel fans).
The game was end to end with both teams trying their best to go for the win. Rugby were low on numbers this morning with a few of the girls not available, unfortunately a few of the girls were also suffering from illness which meant that every player had to put a shift in to keep Rugby’s undefeated start to the season intact.
Rugby also suffered a few injuries during the game, a trip to Boots (other stores are also available) will be required after using 2 cans of freeze spray (these don’t quite make you feel stone cold but come pretty close), 1 can of deep heat and 4 ice packs. This demonstrated how tough the game was but showed that the Rugby girls didn’t back down from whatever Blaby tried.
With home advantage, Blaby were clever in deciding to kick uphill in the first half meaning that Rugby had a harder challenge in the second half when a tough game started to take its toll on all of the Rugby girls.
Rugby didn’t give up and front to back they got stuck in, they are a real pleasure to watch with their never say die attitude. The defence is an absolute rock and makes it difficult for any team because of their tackling ability and in particular the pace of Daisy-May.
A great goal from Sophie and Leila banging in 2 to make it 3-3, the perfect start to the season has come to an end but to remain undefeated was a real achievement this morning and showed how hard the girls worked.
Full Time 3-3
Coaches player Megan , the ultimate warrior in goal today with one particular save getting recognition from both home and away supporters.
Thanks to Dave and Dave for all their encouragement during the match and for giving up their time for training and matches each week. Thanks to Blaby & Whetstone for a good game, the referee, the linesmen and to the parents for the Sunday morning journey to Leicestershire.
Also a special mention to Amelia, all at Rugby Town wish her a speedy recovery from her injury.
