Team Sponsors: Purely Mortgages and Life Investments Estate Agents
Squad: Norah, Emma, Bella, Ellie, Ellen, Izzy, Gracie, Poppy, Sophie
Rugby Town hosted Barrow in our opening home game of the season. Following a scorching week the weather was cloudy but very warm and muggy and keeping energy levels high was going to be tough.
Rugby started with Norah in goal, a back line of Bella and Poppy a midfield three of Gracie, Ellen Ellie and Emma spearing the attack. The game started with a strong intensity with both teams creating piercing attacks within the first few minutes, Following this the game settled into a pattern and showed the contrasting styles of the two teams. Barrow made use of their long balls from defence while Rugby looked to play through the thirds. While this style of play should be commended, the number of passes back to the goalkeeper was not always good for the blood pressure! Both sides made regular changes to protect players from the heat and there were also regular drinks breaks. At half-time, both teams could be pleased with their efforts.
In the second half energy levels noticeably dropped and regular substitutions and position changes were made to try and help the team keep going. Izzy moved from defence to midfield throughout the game and demonstrated her strength and determination throughout. Emma, Sophie, Ellie and Ellen cycled through playing front to keep giving the Barrow defence different problems to solve. Gracie switched from wing to wing and Bella utilised her energy across defence and midfield and was excellently supported by Poppy. Norah played in goal throughout. In the end, both teams looked relieved to hear the final whistle. The entire squad put in a fantastic effort and hopefully relaxed and cooled off with an ice cream in the afternoon! Next week the team travels to face Oadby and Wigston.
PPOM: Bella for consistent effort in extremely hot conditions.
CPOM: Izzy for excellent strength in defence and great movement in midfield. It is supper to see the great progress she has made in such a short space of time.
