After a long delay due to a large traffic jam at the host venue our warm up was curtailed, however, given the hot conditions a shorter warm up didn’t really do any harm.
Our two meetings last season saw Kibworth win 1-2 at Butlin Road (October), and the points were shared in April in a 1-1 draw at Kibworth.

Most, if not all our games this season should be close affairs in what appears to be a well balanced league. This will provide an excellent test each week and a good measure of how much the girls have improved, and can develop over the course of the year.
Today then was the first of these and it was pleasing to see the girls dominate much of the game. I thought the first 30 minutes in particular was very impressive, the way we tried to get the ball down and pass the ball forward in phases was excellent.
Rugby opened the scoring when Bailey dug out a shot from under her feet that slid into the bottom corner from 12 yards.
Rugby went 0-2 up just 5 minutes later when Cara got herself on the end of a fantastic cross from Chloe.
Despite dominating possession and looking comfortable, Rugby then conceded when a rather straight and hopeful bounced awkwardly between our defence and GK. The Kibworth forward was first to it and prodded the ball past the on rushing Fifi to reduce the arrears.
Rugby restored their 2 goal advantage when the Kibworth keeper could only parry a shot from Hollie…Bailey reacted well to follow up and calmly slotted in past the despairing keepers dive.

HT 1-3
The second half was more even, with both teams creating several chances as the heat, hard work and fitness levels began to open up spaces between players and units, that were being exploited as each team attacked in turn.

Rugby still managed some lovely moves and the short passing at times was superb to watch.
The next goal was going to be important in deciding the momentum of the game, fortunately it came for Rugby when an excellent corner (one of many taking by Grace R, Chloe, Sofia and Ellie) was volleyed home by Cara for her second of the match.
Kibworth were not going to lie down and be steam rolleres though, an excellent attitude to compete was rewarded when an underhit pass back was pounced on, Fifi managed to force the striker wide but she had the skill to round the keeper before passing into an empty net.
Rugby effectively sealed the points with the goal of the game. Sofia, played a lovely one-two to create herself some time, and from 20 yards she powered and thunderous effort over the Kibworth keeper for 2-5.

Kibworth had time to make the last 10 minutes a little more nervous than we’d have liked when they scored themselves from a corner, a brilliant volley to the top corner.
Rugby continued to work hard, create chances and snuff out the most dangerous chances as Kibworth tried to rescue the game, but alas on the final whistle it was a well earned, and deserved opening day win for Rugby.

Coaches Player of the Match: Hollie 🏆
Parents Player of the Match: Ellie 🏆
Players Player of the Match: Soapy & Ruby 🏆
Well done to all on a great win. Thanks to all the parents for your fantastic support.
