Rugby Town U8s VS Croft Juniors U8s Sapphires

Team – Saanvi, Lexi, Lily, Erin, Scarlett, Mabel, Evelyn, May, Peggy
A cold morning for the first game of 2023 gave the perfect opportunity for the team to try out their new Macron Sports Hub Northamptonshire windbreakers, a great addition to the team kit kindly donated by Life Investments estate agency.
Right from the warm up, the sense of energy and determination in the team was obvious. Each of the girls were clearly ready to give it 100% to try and break the run of bad luck over the last few games.
The game started as expected, with our capable opponents showing a strength and quality we have become used to this season. The first two quarters were very even between the two teams. . Lexi, Erin and May were strong up front, chasing down every loose ball and leading the line tenaciously pressing the other team.
Saanvi, Evelyn and Peggy made some great forward runs from midfield, whilst at the same time being prepared to do defensive duty closing down and not giving the opponent time or space to build momentum. In the second quarter in particular Lily showed fantastic determination battling for every ball, and several times broke up important plays from the other team. As usual, Scarlett and Mabel were resolute in defence, and ready to intercept and clear anything the opponents could throw at them.
In the third quarter Rugby gained the upper hand in the play, displaying great patience and determination. Every player felt like they could impact the game and the enthusiasm was infectious. It was great to watch, and every member of the team should be proud of their performance. Scarlett in particular provided an outstanding run from box to box.
There was still a job to do in the last quarter, and the team professionally closed the game out with cool heads .
Player of the match went to May – Her persistent determination was a vital contribution to the team’s performance.
