Kick-off 10:30am

November 20th 2022 Match 8

Team: Esme, Roisin, Emy-Mae, Emilia, Sienna W.., Sienna M.., Phoebe

Team Sponsor: Lightning Tools

We had the treat of a Home Fixture this weekend after playing away for the last two weeks.  We faced Nuneaton Borough who played in a smart pink away strip. Sara and Steve again had a good number of players to rotate during the match and decided to start with Phoebe in goal, Emy-Mae, Roisin and both Sienna’s. Nuneaton had been on a good run of form so the coaching teams were expecting a competitive match from both sides in the bright sunshine of a winter November morning.

The match started with Rugby causing the Nuneaton defence a constant attacking threat from Sienna W., Sienna M. and Roisin with some nice touches and understanding play. It was from one of these moments that Sienna M. cut in from the left wing in the early minutes. Nuneaton instantly fired back but undeterred Sienna W. pushed forward with some very good football and displaying a high degree of composure. Roisin playing up front also showed some positive touches that allowed Rugby to push hard on the Nuneaton defence throughout the first period. The coaches introduced Emilia and Esme later in the first half to keep the energy levels high and they both showed defensive and attacking flair with Emy-Mae also being the rock at the heart of the Rugby defence, blocking and saving numerous Nuneaton counter attacking opportunities. As we entered the end of the first period the game was equal and balanced after a sustained period of Nuneaton pressure.

The start of the second half saw Esme in goal, Emy-Mae back in defence with Emilia and Sienna M. in the middle with Phoebe up front. Throughout this period it has to be highlighted that Emy-Mae’s work-rate and display during the entire match allowed the Rugby team to enjoy a large spell of attacking football, whilst pushing in from the wings at pace. With Sienna M., Phoebe and Emilia delivering many opportunities despite the strength of the Nuneaton defence and good goalkeeping. After a period of sustained pressure Phoebe managed to win the ball on the edge of the area from a Nuneaton defender and then quickly find space she needed.  As Rugby entered the last period Roisin was introduced to replace Phoebe up front and the pace and the work rate continued with the team showing some excellent passing and more opportunities. Whenever Nuneaton counter attacked after sustained Rugby pressure Esme in goal showed why this is becoming a role she is making her own with numerous diving saves to counter any Nuneaton threat. As the game came to an end both teams had worked hard in a good clean and fast-flowing enjoyable game.

A strong performance from Rugby and with some real highlights from the players. Passing and understanding of the game is improving week by week and shows the importance of the training sessions. As we continue into this season the team are showing a great ability to attack with pace and hold high energy levels which shows during the last periods of the games we have played this season. Equally we now need to blend this with getting back more and meeting the counter attack from the teams we play with gusto and determination.

Managers Players: Emy-Mae: A very strong display throughout the entire match that allowed the team the freedom to play an attacking style. Winning many 50/50 challenges and pushing the ball forward with great composure.

Parents Player: Phoebe: For improvement in outfield play, determination, and some great skills displayed as a striker.
