RTGWFC U7 v Dunton & Broughton U8 (U8 league)

Sunday 20th November 2022

Against a backdrop of a crisp, sunny morning, Rugby faced a stern challenge against visitors Dunton & Broughton U8s.  As always, Rugby girls arrived in fine spirits and raring to go.  The game was played over 4 quarters.

Rugby started with Ada as goalkeeper, Charlotte and Primrose in defence, Maisie F in midfield with Flossy as striker.  The visitors immediately pressed Rugby’s defence but their attacks were neutralised by some robust defending by Charlotte and Primrose.  Ada also made some excellent saves coupled with some impressive goal kicks – something that she has been working on in training.  At the other end of the pitch, Maisie F and Flossy made some good runs with the ball and battled well in the opponent’s half.  Rugby played some of their best football yet during this quarter.

In the second quarter, Rugby rotated the team with Primrose playing in defence, Imogen and Phoebe in midfield, with Paige as striker.  Ada remained as goalkeeper.  The visitors again started energetically and immediately attacked Rugby’s goal.   However, Rugby continued to defend well.  During last week’s training session, Rugby worked on their positional play with corners and this was demonstrated by the girls holding their positions well and defending effectively.  Ada displayed some very brave goalkeeping whilst Primrose made some brilliant tackles in defence.  Imogen and Phoebe dribbled well with the ball, ably supported by Paige.

After half time, Rugby utilised having a near full squad with Paige swapping with Ada as goalkeeper, Charlotte returning in defence, Imogen and Maisie F in midfield with Flossie as striker.  The visitors were swiftly deployed several pressing attacs.  However, Rugby showed some very promising attacking moves with Flossy, Maisie and Imogen with some brilliant runs.

Towards the end of the third quarter and during the final quarter, Ada, Phoebe and Charlotte replaced tired legs and were all brave with their tackles and all the girls worked hard until the final whistle.

Against an older and experienced opposition, Rugby played some good football today, particularly during the first two quarters. Its great to see the girls continuing to play the game with determination and enjoying their football.  Keep smiling girls! 😊

Coaches’ player of the match went to Imogen for a brilliant attacking run and some good tackling.  Parents’ player of the match went to Maisie F for her determination, attacking runs and robust tackling.  Players’ player of the match went to Charlotte for excellent defending.

Thanks as always to parents/carers for their continued support and to the match referee, Harrison.
