Rugby faced their furthest journey for an away fixture this season against hosts Asfordby Amateurs U8s.  Despite heavy rain the night before, the grass pitch was in good condition and weather conditions were ideal.  Even with the long travel, Rugby girls arrived in great spirits and excited at the challenge ahead.  Today’s game was played over 4 quarters.

Rugby started with Paige as goalkeeper, Maisie and Primrose in defence and Sophie and Ada in attacking positions.  Rugby stayed really positive – demonstrated by some lovely dribbling by Maisie and Sophie was unlucky not to enjoy success after some excellent defending by the hosts.  This was underpinned by Ada and Primrose defending strongly and Paige making some confident saves.

In the second quarter, Rugby rotated the team with Ada as goalkeeper, Imogen and Primrose playing in defence with Flossy and Maisie in attacking positions.  Rugby started this quarter with real energy.  Flossy and Sophie attacked the ball well and Imogen and Primrose made some important tackles.  Both sides enjoyed positive play in this quarter with Sophie shining particularly brightly shortly before half time.  Ada continues to develop as a goalkeeper and once again showcased her bravery and positional awareness with some great saves.

In the second half, Rugby rotated their squad with Paige and Sophie interchanging as striker.  Throughout the third and fourth quarters, Rugby defended well with Primrose, Flossy and Ada making some excellent tackles.  Imogen and Maisie hustled well in midfield, ably supported by Paige.  Sophie made several attacking runs against the hosts’ defence and again delivered some good attacking play. Maisie battled well throughout and was only denied by some good defending by the hosts.  During the second half, the hosts were able to use their experience to good effect and they had some impressive attacks at Rugby’s goal.  Primrose, after effectively playing every position on the pitch at some point, also took a turn in goal making some good blocks when needed.

Rugby continued their high energy and kept going until the very end.  Rugby continue to develop each week and this week in particular, the girls defended corners well throughout the match – something that we have been working on in training.

Coaches’ player of the match went to Flossy for her high energy throughout the game, exemplified by some brilliant tackles and good attacking runs.  Rumour has it that a well-earned McDonalds beckoned for her efforts!

Parents’ player of the match went to Sophie for her determination, attacking runs and brilliant strikes.

Players’ player of the match went to Primrose for playing pretty much every position on the pitch brilliantly.

Thanks as always to parents/carers for their continued support.  See you next week.
