This away fixture was an early start for the girls, but the team arrived in good spirits and were raring to go. Rugby had a full squad, and the game was played over 4 quarters.
Rugby started the game with Imogen in goal, Primrose occupying defence, Paige, and Flossy in midfield with Sophie playing upfront. The home side started very promisingly with plenty of early attacks against Rugby’s goal. Some excellent defending by Primrose and Imogen and some lovely runs by Flossy and Sophie, ably supported by Paige.
In the second quarter, Rugby rotated the team with Ada coming in as goalkeeper, Charlotte and Phoebe playing in defence, with Maisie B and Maisie F attacking. The home side continued to press the visitors but solid defending from Charlotte and Phoebe, and Ada in goal were handling the pressure well. Throughout the quarter, Maisie B and Maisie F battled well in midfield and both sides were able to counterbalance each other effectively.
The third quarter saw Charlotte taking the role of goalkeeper, Paige occupying defence which allowed for Flossy, Primrose, and Sophie to focus on their attacking runs. Charlotte had an excellent period in goal with Paige providing strong defensive cover. Following a sustained period of strong attacking play, Rugby saw very positive play courtesy of Primrose and Flossy.
In the final quarter, Rugby rested some weary legs and utilised its full squad with Phoebe making her debut as goalkeeper, Imogen and Ada playing in defence with Maisie B and Maise F invited to attack the home goal. The home side started the final quarter very strongly. Rugby continued to work hard until the final whistle with Maisie F in particular battling strongly in midfield.
All the girls did themselves, their families, and their coaches proud. Against a strong opposition, the team worked tirelessly until the end and all the girls finished the game smiling!
A big thank you should go to the coaching staff of Sileby for being incredibly welcoming and respectful to Rugby. Parents’ player of the match was awarded to Flossy for some brilliant dribbling and attacking play. The coaches’ player of the match was awarded to Ada for some very brave goalkeeping and positional awareness. Finally, a big thank you to all parents for their support and travelling so early on a Sunday!
