Rugby Town welcomed Asfordby to Butlin Rd for our U9s match. The weather was sunny and cool, perfect for playing and watching football. Asfordby won kick-off and started off quickly with good possession. Emilia and Sienna M. started as our two forwards, and Emy-Mae and Alexis started in defense, with Phoebe in goal. The first half saw some strong play by both sides, a real battle of back-and-forth possession. Both teams were evenly matched, and although Rugby Town found themselves out of position a few times, giving Asfordby opportunities, the players managed to make some crucial tackles to keep it even. A substitution saw Esme take on an attacking role for Sienna M., adding some fresh energy to the game. During one of Asfordby’s strong offensive runs, Phoebe came off the line to narrow the angle, preventing the opposition from any opportunities.
The second half started fresh, with Town demonstrating some nice passing sequences, but still finding a strong Asfordby stopping each advancement. Esme, now in goal, made some diving saves with natural ease. There was plenty of excellent teamwork displayed by both teams, with both also defending each other’s attacks quite well. That is, until some nice link-up play to Emy-Mae, showing quick maneuvering and composure, gave Rugby Town a reason to cheer. Izzy and Roisin made appearances in defense and offense respectively, showing much improvement and confidence, demonstrating that both have been working hard in training. Full-time found the coaches pleased with the effort the players put in, having shown plenty of hard work over the 40 minutes.
Managers Players: Alexis, having shown improved hustle and grit on the pitch.
Parents Player: Emilia, for making many great tackles and hustling to help support the defense when they were caught out.
