Squad: Agga, Beth, El, Elisa, Emmi, Jess, Katie, Lena, Macy, Maddie, Poppy, Ruby, Tanisha
Rugby Town u13s Lionesses hosted Nuneaton Town Blues u13s, hoping to continue their good start to the season.
Rugby felt confident despite a number of girls being unavailable for today’s match.
The game was exciting from the start with lots of effort being put in by both teams.
Emmi returned in goal, having missed the last game, Emmi made some nice saves when called upon. Emmi worked well with the Rugby defence Lena, Ruby, Beth, and Maddie, and it is great to see them communicating well. They all combined to keep a good defence, especially in the first half. Their hard work has meant they’ve only conceded two goals in the first five games.
Katie began the game in her usual holding midfield position and had a solid game throughout. She broke up a number of opposition attacks and distributed the ball well.
Tanisha playing in her first game as an outfield player also played in the holding midfield role and did well to mark the opposition striker, to see the first half out.
El, Poppy, Macy, and Elisa played in the attacking midfield positions during the game, and all made some fantastic forward runs. They passed the ball well between them and created a number of chances for both themselves and the Rugby forward line. However, it was great to see that when needed they got back quickly to help defend and rebuild Rugby attacking moves.
Rugby’s attack was led well by Jess, who had a number of good chances, and got the opening goal to give Rugby the lead, and was unfortunate not to get at least a couple more.
Agga making her debut played as an attacking midfielder, in the gap behind Jess. She not only supported Jess she also made a number of great attacking moves and was rightly rewarded with a goal, to give Rugby a 2-0 lead.
The momentum of the game swung back and forth, and neither team took their foot off the pedal, Nuneaton did manage to get a goal to make it 2-1, but Rugby settled themselves to see the game out.
The Rugby players have really matured and grown in confidence to get the result even if they didn’t play their best football. This shows they have can dig deep and grind it out if needed.
Final score 2-1
Parents player: Katie, for a strong central midfield performance, being involved in defence and starting Rugby attacks throughout the game.
Managers player: Poppy, for a skillful performance on the wing, creating a number of Rugby chances, and could have also got herself on the score sheet.
Thank you to Pete for assisting and running the line, and thanks to the parents for their fantastic support of the girls.
