A home game at Butlin Road and the pre-booked sunny weather for match day after the downpour at training on Friday was appreciated by players and supporters alike. Rugby were in a change of kit for this game, playing in purple rather than the usual light blue, big thanks to the sponsors Oxygen Graphics for this.

Rugby started the first half well and Jasmine had an early shot after a quick throw. Quick thinking was clearly something that had been worked on in training as Rugby kept trying to get the game going again each time the ball went out of play. Oadby then had a shot that was well saved by Megan, Rugby then able to clear their lines from the resulting corner.

Oadby were coming more into the game but good tackling from Rugby meant that any attacks were broken down before they could get close to Megan’s call, Sophie in particular got stuck in and won the ball back on a number of occasions. This was the wake up call that Rugby needed, winning a corner after a forward run from Poppy.

The referee then awarded Rugby a free kick but they were not able to capitalise on it. Oadby went down the other end and came very close to opening the scoring, the Rugby post coming to the rescue after a good run and shot from the Oadby forward. Rugby came back and Izzy had a shot that went just over.

Half time 0-0, a very open first half but both defences coming out on top to keep the scores level. Amelia and Daisy-May were excellent at the back from Rugby with a number of clearances to keep Oadby away from the Rugby goal.

Into the second half and Jasmine opened the scoring, a good finish in the bottom corner after running past the defender. Whatever Dave had said at half time and worked and Rugby were full of energy and going after the ball at every opportunity. Rugby had two corners in quick succession but were not able to turn the possession into another goal.

The game started to open up more as both teams started to tire. Rugby making good use of their substitutes to try and increase the energy levels on the pitch. Bianca was strong through midfield, Erin was full of running on the wing and Caitlin also put in some good tackles in the middle of the park.

Oadby then equalised after a goal kick, a good run and finish to make it 1-1. The game continued to be end to end with Ronniee covering a lot of ground as usual and putting in some big tackles to keep Oadby out. An Oadby corner almost resulted in a second goal with the bar this time coming to the rescue.

In the dying minutes of the game Macey had a half chance to win it for Rugby but her shot went just wide with the goalkeeper beaten.

Final score 1-1 which was a fair result, both teams had good chances to win it in the second half. Plenty of positives for Rugby but a few things to work on for the next match.
