“Goals Win Games”

The girls travelled to Coalville this morning hoping to get their third win of the season but were left ruing a hat full of missed chances.

The first five minutes were scrappy and both teams gave the ball away cheaply. However, it was Rugby who settled quickest and began to play some lovely football. The girls were getting the ball down and were beginning to find their flow when they were sucker punched with two quick goals as a result of two avoidable errors at the back. Twice we gave the ball away cheaply in front of Arlo and were ruthlessly punished.

Rugby were still demonstrating the better movement and passing, and were unfortunate not to reduce the arrears, we simply couldn’t make the final ball or shot the killer one and so HT came with us 2-0 down.

It was unfortunately a similar story in the second half, only more frustratingly so than the first. This time, as well as the majority of possession, Rugby enjoyed excellent chance creation and an overwhelming territorial advantage. But, when the time came convert we were guilty of squandering the opportunities, hitting the woodwork, shots rolling agonisingly past outstretched boots, or simply not striking the ball like we do so well and so often in training. Alas, we were again made to pay when, with one of their only attacks of the entire second half Coalville got a corner. It was taken quickly and several failures to clear later the ball was smashed in from 3 yards out, leaving everyone wondering how we had not won this game, let alone lost 3-0.

Lots of positives to take and it is clear to see that out style of play is starting to show, we will work on those defensive frailties this week and also look to improve our ability to convert the good opportunities we are creating, ultimately both are needed if we want to increase our win percentage.
