The first game of a new season and a Sunday morning trip to Leicestershire for a match against a strong Blaby & Whetstone team. With a few changes in personnel it was always going to be a tough match for Rugby.

Blaby started the first half strongly and had an early shot that tested Megan in the Rugby goal. Rugby started to find their feet and had two good crosses, first from Macey and then from Sophie. Ronniee was, as usual, excellent in midfield putting in big tackles to try and win the ball back for Rugby. Blaby came back and had another shot that was well blocked and went out for a corner.

Blaby then had a shot that just managed to sneak past Megan, this sparked Rugby to life and they started to get back into the game. Dave & Dave started to use their subs and it was almost successful with Sophie having a shot that just went wide. After a foul just outside the area Jasmine had a free kick that was well blocked by the Blaby defence. Blaby came back into the game and after a good move scored a second goal to make it 2-0 at half time.

Into the second half and another good cross from Sophie, Rugby were creating chances and had a couple of corners in quick succession but couldn’t capitalise on their possession. Blaby then scored again, a cross that was knocked back and a good finish from the Blaby striker.

Rugby didn’t let their heads drop and with excellent encouragement from Dave on the touchline kept attacking. Jasmine had a good shot saved by the excellent Blaby goalkeeper. Poppy, Sophie and Macey all had shots near the end of the second half but were not able to get the goal that the effort deserved. Daisy-May in defence put in a number of good tackles and covered a lot of ground.

Final score 3-0 to Blaby & Whetstone but lots of positives for Rugby, the whole team didn’t give up and kept running until the final whistle.
