Playing a late morning game in our light blue, Rugby Town U8s had a Mother’s Day match against our friendly neighbours, Rugby Borough, playing in orange.

Missing a couple players today, we started with Esme in goal, Emilia in centre back, Emy-Mae and Evie in midfield, and Sienna M. in her favourite striker position.

Kick-off saw Rugby Borough jump straight in with determination, pressing hard and making Rugby Town really dig deep to keep opposition limited in their forward attack.

While the girls fought hard, we were over run on too many occasions. Esme worked hard in goal, making some great saves. While Town had plenty of moments of good passing and attacking runs, the final ball alluded them.

In the second half, Emilia volunteered for goal for the first time in her career and did quite well…enough to enjoy it and request a future opportunity. We watched Evie make some focused attacks, and Alexis and Sienna M. both demonstrated elements of their hard pressing, though we couldn’t quite get the finishes we’ve been used to, courtesy of the strong Borough defence.

Emy-Mae and Emilia both performed some timely tackles, which saved us on multiple occasions. Overall, it wasn’t our best performance, however, hats off to Borough who played brilliantly, and are always great competitors.

Player of the Match: Emilia, for solid defending and making a debut in goal.

Parent’s Player of the Match: Esme, for keeping her cool and making some great saves in goal.
