Kick off was a little bit later than normal with a start time of 12:30 against Burbage who played in red with black stripes. The sky was overcast but dry and it seemed a bit warmer than previous weeks so in many ways perfect conditions for both sets of players, coaching team and the parents.

As this was our first game against Burbage this season we were unsure how this match would unfold and the Rugby girls soon and very quickly set out how they intended to play. This was with a high energy display that was dedicated and totally committed involving great goal keeping, defending, and fast paced striking techniques through the entire 40 mins of the game. The Friday training session had obviously worked as the girls found the interconnection of passes easily, whilst building up the play from the back to the front with frequent ease. Phoebe being back in goal seemed to give the team confidence in moving forward at will, and her long kicks made a big difference in the attacking dynamic of the game.

The Rugby girls continued to move forward again and again towards the Burbage goal with a constant stream of flowing runs and passing in the first half, supported by the fresh legs of Alexis and Emy-Mae. Strong tackles from the team in all positions, especially with the 50/50 ball.

Second half started with Emilia and Sienna W. having some well-earned rest after a half of non-stop running, changed with Sienna M. and Esme taking over. It showed how far the team has progressed this season as they continued to press throughout the whole second half period as one unit with great team spirit and high energy levels. Emy-Mae with powerful runs, tackles and goal bound moments that were supported by Esme and Sienna M., with some great team play and interchange. We then had the moment of the game that was like a moment of Women’s Super League (WSL), with the Rugby Town U8s passing three balls together in quick succession and followed by a long sweeping pass to Sienna W. on the wing. Phoebe throughout the second half ensured excellent distribution which enabled Rugby to push forward whilst giving no rest to the Burbage defence.

This was a very enjoyable game and every player today should be proud of what they achieved with skill, hard work, and top teamwork. The coaching team even decided to take five in the last few minutes, which was a pure testament to the time, dedication, and support that they have invested in a very talented group of players. Well done Rugby U8s a great and very entertaining match.

Player of the Match: Sienna M. for her hardworking non-stop display and effort.

Parent’s player: Emy-Mae for the tackling and commitment in all positions on the pitch.
