Rugby Town u12 Lionesses traveled to Cosby Cyclones having had a few weeks off from the league, however, Rugby had almost a full squad available for the game.
Rugby started the game strongly and was putting the opposition under early pressure. Rugby was keeping good possession of the ball which was great to see, as they have been working hard in training in this area.
The first half was going well, however, a counterattack by Cosby followed by a great shot coming in from the wing put the home side up 1 nil. Rugby did not let themselves ease off and finished the first half having played arguably the better football.
This was especially nice to see when a number of the girls were trying out new positions for the first time.
The second half started more even with Cosby pushing Rugby, and a few through balls brought some fantastic work from Emmi in the Rugby goal, including a double save.
However despite some great football Rugby could not find the finish despite some great efforts, including one from Alice who was playing in midfield, a change from her normal position at fullback. Her shot was literally stopped on the line by the Cosby keeper, her performance in this new position today deserved the goal.
A number of other chances again just didn’t fall right.
Rugby, unfortunately, conceded two more in the second half, which left the score far from a representation of the game.
The girls both as a team and as individuals arguably had one of their strongest performances of the season. However, like many games, this season just didn’t have lady luck on their side.
The continued improvements in teamwork and performances in recent weeks is great to see.
Also the individual development of players, to play in new positions bodes well for the future flexibility of the squad.
Final score 3-0
Parent’s player of the game: Elisa, who has really taken her game to the next level recently.
Manager’s player: Lena for a strong performance in 3 positions throughout the game!
Thank you to Pete for assisting and running the line.
Thank you to the parents for their fantastic support of the girls.
