Rugby Town u12 Lionesses traveled to Barrow with just 9 players.
Matilda and Katie volunteered to take turns playing in goal, always a tough ask.
Also several girls were being asked to play in different positions today, which they did without hesitation.
Rugby started the game strong and were putting Barrow under a lot of pressure. There were several attempts just wide by Rugby, and Barrow were forced to kick into touch on several occasions, which only added to the mounting pressure on Barrow.
Rugby dominated the first half, with Matilda having very little to do, however she had great communication to shout for the ball when needed. However, as the game went on, despite some great attacking play by Rugby, they just couldn’t find the finish needed during the first half. The girls came off at half time feeling confident, but they were clearly tired without any rotation.
The second half again started well for Rugby, who were still having the best of the possession and attempts on goal. However, as the half went on, it was clear the Rugby girls were now feeling the results of their efforts so far, and Barrow started to be allowed into the game. Katie had bravely put the keepers gloves on for the second half and did well.
Unfortunately, a scrappy moment did allow Barrow to score from one their very few efforts on target. This was not an individual error, simply a case of heavy legs.
Rugby continued to battle to the end, and again continued to pressure the Barrow goal. With several really good shots wide or over.
As the half went on, it was getting harder to maintain the pressure and the game ended in a tough result for the better team.
Every player gave 100% today, and left it all on the pitch, and should be proud.
Final score 1-0 Barrow.
Parent’s player of the game: Alice, who was again asked to play in midfield today. A new position, but she never stopped running and made some great tackles as well as link up play to the forwards.
Manager’s player: Ruby for a strong performance throughout the game, and the way she stepped forward to nip out pressure early.
