The U11 traveled the short distance to Kilsby Lane to play Rugby Borough on a gloriously sunny morning for what turned out to be a terrific game between two well-matched sides.
The initial play was dominated by Borough, as their physical size and competitive nature was initially a bit of a shock to the system. They tested Jasmine with some early shots and she made some smart saves.
This seemed to be the spark that Town needed, and they began to grow in confidence. Olivia continued to demonstrate her defensive ability with her usual grace and calm approach as she shepherded players twice her size. Ruby was using her skills and vision to spray passes around the pitch whilst also working against girls much bigger than her.
Anya, Annabelle and Sophia were all getting stuck into a midfield battle that lasted the entire match, and both sides were fully committed in their tackling which led to the unusual sight of fouls being committed and free kicks being taken. After being on the receiving end of a slide tackle, Annabelle was substituted for Ava and it was great to see her back and close to full fitness again.
Some moments of real quality started to come through in the passing and movement, with Olivia and Sophia linking up, Chloe finding space and Anya bossing the midfield. A superb through ball found Ava on the outside of the area where she demonstrated her trademark dribbling skills.
The second half started with Annabelle making her debut in goal and there was great commitment from every player in protecting her; the teamwork shown was incredible and the girls were really working hard for each other. As both sides continued to battle away, the quality chances were from Town. Pressing high up the pitch, with Chloe and Ava stretching the play and more space being created, Jasmine was able to link up with Sophia who was started making her attacking runs and battled through.
A frantic final 10 minutes and a succession of Borough corners led to resolute defending. This rear-guard action continued to the final whistle and the end of a closely fought match.
