Rugby Town Girls U8 vs Ambleside Junior U8 Diamonds

14/11/2021

Squad: Alexis, Emy-Mae, Esme, Phoebe, Sienna M

Sponsor: Lightning Tools

Mid-morning kick off at home for the team this week. The weather conditions were dry and cool, with a hint of sunshine.

Only having 5 players available this week, we opted with agreement from the opposition, for playing 4x 10-minute quarters to give the girls more rest periods.

Coming off the back of two positive results in a row, expectations were raised for the team’s performance and they certainly didn’t disappoint us…

After a quick start by the opposition, it was evident the team needed to dig deep, defend well, and stem the flow of the some very skilled and quick forwards from Ambleside team. The girl’s confidence grew, and the game settled down late in the first quarter. The second quarter saw our defense hold firm, at this point we should give a special mention to Alexis for a great defensive performance in her first match. It was certainly a tough introduction to match play, but Alexis coped very well under this pressure.

Rugby then started to counterattack effectively with some great rewards in return for the never give up/run your socks off attitude . By the end of the third quarter the game had closed up a little and rewards for teamwork and work ethic were paying off. Emy-Mae and Alexis rotating defensive and midfield duties, Sienna and Esme rotating left and right up front probing the oppositions defense with none stop pressure. The oppositions threat remained throughout the entire game so some great saves from Phoebe between the sticks ensured we remained in the hunt.

This game showed how mentally strong the team is, not one player let their head drop, no player was giving up, the whole team remained positive and just relentlessly kept at it throughout the entire game. For this they should all be very proud of themselves, as the coaches were and I’m sure the watching parents/guardians were, too.

Well done girls, you were fantastic today.
