Sunday 12th September
Squad: Ellie, Esme, Emilia, Phoebe, Lily
Sponsor: Lightning Tools
Traveling to nearby Lutterworth for their first match of the season, Rugby Town was eager and excited to be back on the pitch. While individually our squad was not new to match play, it was the first game where this specific group has played together outside of Friday practice. The weather was warm and sunny, with the girls playing on a grass pitch.
Rugby started strong with Phoebe in goal, Emilia in defense, Lily and Esme in midfield, and Ellie at the top of our formation. Rugby Town started strong, with Emilia stopping the majority of advances by the opposition before any potential opportunities. Lily and Esme were brilliant with tackling and moving the ball forward. Lutterworth moved the ball up the middle quite often, with our midfield making speedy tackles when needed.
When opposition did manage to break our defences, Phoebe was there to make some tremendous saves, always staying calm and collected. Phoebe’s goalie kicks were ace, which is a testament to her dedication over the summer. Ellie proved to be strong up front often having breakaway chances or passing off to Lily or Esme when pressed. Ellie also took over defense in the latter quarter of the match, allowing Emilia to have a chance at striking.
Lily showed tremendous hustle, pressing forward when in possesion and immediately coming back to defend if the ball was lost. Rugby managed some superb opportunities, with success more than once, by some smashing attacking by Esme. Towards the last 10 minutes, Rugby was started to feel the impact of playing without any substitutes, which allowed a few breaks in defense by the opposition. Overall, Rugby exhibited a formidable appearance for their first game of the season.
Manager’s Player: Esme, for her quick decision making, teamwork, and effort in both attacking and defending.
Parent’s Player: Emilia, for her confident tackling and clearance in defense.
