Our Under 7 team played their first game today on a very hot day over at at Dunton & Broughton, and the girls were very excited to pull on the blue shirt for the very first time.
It was a very close game from start to finish, with both teams battling hard to gain the upper hand. It was good to see plenty of goals, plenty of tackles and plenty of strong running with the ball. But it was particularly pleasing to see the girls looking up and looking to pick out a pass to their team mates.
As usual, most of the team had a go in goal, and in possibly her last game as coach, Alice swapped things around to make sure that the girls get used to playing in different positions.
There were loads of good things to take from the game, plus a few things for us to work on in training. The girls have done amazingly well so far, we just need a bit more practice in some of the game play situations eg throw ins, goal kicks, corners etc. The team has so much potential and combined with a bit more game knowledge will become an even bigger force to be reckoned with.
Two special mentions:
Player of the match, decided by the parents and coaches was Peggy
Peggy started in goal, but also played outfield and put in an all action performance. Peggy made some great tackles in midfield and some fantastic runs toward the opposition goal, so much so that her team mates struggled to keep up with her at times.
Secondly a big thank you to Alice. Today was her last time as match day coach before going off to to university to study football coaching and management at Wembley Stadium in London. Alice has been with Rugby Town since she was 12 years old and played for teams up to Under 16s and latterly the Women’s Team, as well as delivering coaching sessions for the last few years. Thank you for all your hard work, you will be missed.
