2019 sees the English Women’s National Football Team ‘The Lionesses’ qualify for the FIFA Women’s 2019 World Cup in France, closer to home, around one hundred and fifty local girls and women train and compete for Rugby Town Girls and Ladies Football Club. Girls come from the town of Rugby and the surrounding area, starting their journey in the Wild Cats Centre at 5 years old and continue right through to open age ladies football, all training together at the Kilsby Lane facility, Hillmorton. The club is run mainly by voluntary coaches and committee members and players compete in matches all over the East and West Midlands.
Scoring goals and good defence is the name of the game, however, football also allows the girls to develop great team building skills, interpersonal skills and resilience, whilst keeping fit and developing their confidence. All great skills and qualities to equip them for life! The club strives hard to nurture a social side allowing the girls to make friends and form strong teams.
Friday 7th June sees the club’s big annual end of season event for players and their families at the Benn Hall, Rugby with entertainment, food and awards. All girls regardless of the number of goals scored (or not) are rewarded through a variety of trophies and no one goes home empty-handed. Every girl comes away with a trophy as recognition of their commitment and hard work for the club. Hopefully we’ll see some of these girls playing for the Lionesses in the near future.
A great night is had by all!
