Rugby Town Girls u11s v AFC Leicester u11s

Rugby Town U11’s v AFC Leicester U11’s

A very close game on Sunday saw honours even between these two sides. With injuries and holidays to contend with, Rugby were reduced to seven outfield players but they started the game rather sluggishly. However, there was hardly anything to choose between the two sides in the first ten minutes but with Rugby looking a little disjointed, the Leicester forwards were creating the best openings after this point.

Jenna had to be at her best to stop chances being turned into goals but from a corner she could do nothing as the ball bounced around in the penalty area before it was struck home to give the visitors the advantage.

The goal kicked Rugby into life and they started to make inroads into the Leicester defence and create chances of their own with some sweet passing but could not find the end product. The Leicester defenders were under pressure now and they started to give away free kicks and from one of these Jasmine saw her goal bound shot well saved by the goal keeper. Rugby though were still being caught out on the break and again it was Jenna who came to the rescue to keep the score down as half time beckoned.

After a “half time verbatim” changes were made with Lila going up front, Jasmine moving to left of midfield and Marley moving into a central midfield slot leaving Rosie and Katie at the back. Holly continued on the right hand side of midfield and as the second half got under way the changes had a positive effect. Rugby were now attacking more and more and making chances but once again the killer instinct in front of goal was missing.

Leicester were still posing a threat but once beyond Rosie and Katie they found no way past Jenna who was having a superb game. The Leicester defenders were still conceding free kicks and one of them cost them the lead as they gave away a stone wall penalty right in front of the referee. Up stepped Lila to drill it past the Leicester keeper to make it all square.

Rugby were playing some delightful passing moves and from one of these Lila was set free only to see her shot drift off target. Leicester were still in the game though and were still creating chances of their own. Shots and corners were now raining in on both goals with the two keepers making good saves up until the full time whistle was blown.

A very good competitive game by both sides which on reflection was the right result over the two halves. No game next week so a chance for some injuries to heal before taking on East Goscote at home on the 11th.
