U14s vs Mowbray Rangers
Starting the season away from home against a good Mowbray team and with 3 injured players was never going to be easy for the team but the players really showed what they are made of.
The team lined up slightly differently today with a plan of defending strongly and countering quickly as a team and they executed really well and certainly deserved a result. The first half saw relatively few clear cut chances as the defence and midfield defended well and Jodie in goal grew in confidence to come out when needed and deal with the high balls swirling in the strong wind against the team.
There were a few nervous moments though when Mowbray threatened but equally the team broke well when they could and created a few moments themselves not least when Mims sent over a perfect free kick after she had been fouled on a driving run. Charlotte also took the game to Mowbray when she had the opportunity to take the ball down the wing with pace and skill. Not long before half time Mowbray broke the deadlock but the team gathered themselves quickly and continued to play their game and Megan equalised a few minutes after.
All square at half time and a welcome few minutes break for all the players. The second half naturally opened up a little as the minutes went on and the players had to keep going. Mowbray tried to get the ball behind the defence but there was some excellent recovering from player of the match Lexy who personified the determination of the team and Savs when this happened. Ella somehow managed to keep going forwards as well as thwart opposition attacks and Erin became stronger in midfield as the game went on. Rugby also created their chances and whilst it was hard to find space up front Mims kept the Mowbray defence on their guard and helped work some opportunities at their end.
As with all draws either team had moments the game could have been won but this was a great performance and result for the Rugby players. The team will undoubtedly show their strengths this season and this was a great base to start from.
