Anstey Nomads Swifts World Cup Tournament

The U10’s and the U10 Wildcats played in the Anstey World Cup Tournament yesterday. The format was 15 minutes per game with each team being given a World Cup team name. The U10’s were picked out as Brazil and the Wildcats as Egypt. All of the teams in the group would play each other once and the group winners and runners up would play in the “World Cup” final.

The U10’s first game was against Allexton (Tunisia) the team they beat in the league Cup Final some weeks ago. With revenge in mind Allexton took the lead only for Lila to score with a header from a corner to ensure the game finished 1-1. The Wildcats first game was against Groby (Switzerland) and although they took the lead, they could not hold on and eventually lost 2-1 The U10’s next match was also against Groby which saw them run out as winners 3-0. The Wildcats next game was against Coalville (Peru) and although they put up a spirited performance, they conceded four goals without reply. The U10’s then took on one of the tournament favorites Anstey Swifts (Spain) and despite Rugby creating the best chances the score ended up 0-0. The Wildcats were Anstey’s next opponents and despite Lily’s heroics in goal, they conceded the game 4-0.

The “local derby” between the U10’s and the Wildcats was up next but despite having the greater possession the U10’s struggled to get the upper hand until a couple of substitution’s saw them score five without reply. The U10’s last group game was against Coalville and they were one nil up within seconds of the kick off with the quickest goal of the tournament from Jasmine. Lila added a second from the penalty spot to secure a 2-1 win. The Wildcats last game was against Allexton but despite a battling performance and more heroics from Lily, they conceded too many goals as Allexton finished runners up in the group. With the U10’s being confirmed as the group winners the stage was set for a re-run of this year’s League Cup final.

Both teams came out onto the pitch with the “World Cup” anthem playing in the background. After respect handshakes had been taken, the game commenced. Rugby made the better chances in the first five minutes but overall it was quite an even game. Then a corner from Lila caused all sorts of problems in the Allexton’s penalty area and in the scramble Madi poked the ball over the line to give Rugby the lead. Allexton hit back but they found Marley, Katie and goalkeeper Jenna in fine form and difficult to break down. The midfield of Jasmine, Lila and Madi were working really hard to help the defence out but they were still finding gaps to send Mellissa away on to the Allexton goal. Rugby needed a second to settle the nerves and it was provided by Jasmine, who smashed the ball past their goalkeeper. Holly and Poppy came on to provide fresh legs and despite Allexton going close on a few occasions, Rugby ran out as worthy winners of the “World Cup” 2-0.

A very hot day and some amazing performances, so very well done girls, we as coaches are very proud of you ALL.

As for the Under 10 Wildcats, an opportunity to experience what playing in the league would be like for next season. They all worked very hard and showed great resilience even though the results went against them, so well done everyone!!
