Rugby Town U11s had the double challenge today of playing a match on the astro pitch against a very strong and cohesive Mountsorrel Meerkats.

Rugby struggled with holding positions today, especially on the wing and in the defensive midfield positions. Mountsorrel were very quick on the counter attack and a number of times we found ourselves caught out at the back with little support for the defenders.

Throw ins and corners were handled quite well today, both when we were taking as well as defending them. Hannah and Kelsey both delivered some good corners and Ellie took some good throw ins. Ellie also provided a strong presence in defence in the second half.
Issy had a little wobble in the first half but showed great resilience and lifted her spirits for a much better spell during the later stages of the second half. Ella had a good first half in defence and tried very hard to keep close to the opposition.

Hannah played both on the wing and in defensive midfield during different periods of the game. She played with much enthusiasm and put in some strong tackles which was great to see.

Amy played in defence this week and definitely gave one of her stronger performances, showing focus and drive to clear the ball during numerous attacking periods by Mountsorrel.

Elle, Tasha and Evie put together a few chances against a very strong defence and were unlucky not to convert on a few occasions. Kelsey had a few good runs and showed some good balls skills, as did Elle. All of the forward players were much more aware of putting the opposition under pressure and fighting to regain and retain possession.
Sophia was kept very busy throughout the entire game, never losing her focus or commitment to go to the ball, drawing positive praise from the opposition coach and supporters.

If nothing else, today’s game again showed the need for us to improve on our positional play, which we will talk about at training and focus our work on that for a few weeks. If we can improve in this area, it will make a massive difference to our game.

Coaches Player of the Match, for effort, communication and many committed saves – Sophia

Parents Player of the Match, for some very strong defensive work and great work rate in the second half – Amy
