On a heavy pitch with only 9 players the team performed exceptionally well at Asfordby. It was a great team performance with all players supporting each other and working extremely hard to get a result.
The first half went Asfordby’s way with a goal but the play was even with both sides posing a threat and defending well and taking it in turns to have periods of attacking. Megan was direct and took the game to Asfordby when the ball came forwards and the defence generally held firm with Amber coming out of goal to deny some good opportunities for Asfordby.
With the girls playing so well as a team there were just slight changes for the second half with the customary change of goalkeepers. 2 goals from Molly gave Rugby the lead and defensively the resolve was amazing as Asfordby made use of fresher legs to push forwards but Lexy, Amber and Charlotte tirelessly performed their duties. Grace continued her first half all-action performance to press high and deny the opposition space. It was noticeable as the game went on in the last 10 minutes the midfield were finding it harder to get back and that was no fault of any of the players as they had given their all to compete so well and in the end Asfordby got an equaliser to make it 2-2. Even then the players summoned more spirit and energy and took the game back to Asfordby and finished the game on the attack.
2-2 was a fair result for a good game of football. Circumstances obviously weren’t perfect for the Rugby Town team so to perform so well was a great achievement and one they should be proud of and take forwards into their remaining games.
Final score: Asfordby Amateurs 2-2
