Rugby Town Ladies FC sponsored by Jamesway Travel made the short journey to Coventry Sphinx this week with high hopes of collecting more points following last weeks performance. Unfortunately, the ladies started slow and failed to switch on for the first ten minutes of the game, allowing three quick goals to be scored.
Once the ladies got into the game, they started to play better football & filled the gaps in midfield keeping the Sphinx attack at bay. The defence of Hannah Parker, Jen Johnston, Caitlin Revan & Kayley Oseman pulled together covering well. The ladies started to try & play more in Sphinx half which with it put them under more pressure. The ladies were rewarded when Kerri Young played a ball into the box, a mis-hit from Sphinx & pressure from Emma Atkinson allowed Loren Bliss to finish playing the ball into the left corner. The first half finished 3-1.
The second half opened with Rugby playing the better football. Within minutes, Emma Atkinson went for a run down the left wing crossing into the box, for Loren Bliss to hit the first time volley into goal. 3-2.
With Rugby settled more into the game, the ladies put the pressure on the Sphinx defence. Kat Watkins played a great game in the middle, making strong tackles and playing the ball forward. Leah Morris cleared up at the back well making some excellent saves where needed.
With 15 minutes to go, Sphinx went down to ten players after being shown a red. Rugby tried to capitalise & nearly did with much of the midfield pushing forward. The ladies had opportunities to score, with good balls being played through but no one able to finish. A disallowed goal & a good save from an Emma Atkinson shot kept Rugby from going home with a point.
